The name Go With Courage was first coined a few years after my breast cancer diagnosis in 2001. A very close relative implored me to “go with courage” through what would be two years of harrowing treatments and surgeries. I hung up the phone, wrote those three words on a piece of pink construction paper, taped it to the refrigerator door, and did not touch it until my wig came off a year later. The name stuck…becoming a mantra of sorts and ultimately becoming the name of our charity.
Once I was strong enough in 2006, I formed a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer team for the American Cancer Society’s walk at Jones Beach. That’s where it all began.
In 2007, my father was battling gall bladder cancer at the same time that my beloved brother, Craig, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. My world and my goals were changed forever when we lost my brother 17 grueling months later. We were so grateful that my father, “Poppy Teddy”, survived. I knew I could do more, and I knew I could do it without overhead and without a middleman.
In 2011, with the support of my incredible husband, Howard, our oldest son, David and later on our younger son, Evan, Go With Courage, Inc. was incorporated as a 501 (C)(3) not-for-profit charity, whose mission was and remains, to fund critical, targeted cancer research with the hope of finding a cure and to support families impacted by all forms of cancer.
With the help and support of our incredibly philanthropic community, local businesses, and friends, we hold social fundraising events throughout the year as well as take part in and support other, like-minded efforts run by retailers and charities.
We also have the support of the Roslyn public school system, which allows students to volunteer and receive community service credit for their efforts. A select few outstanding volunteers go on to be awarded nationally recognized awards for their commitment to Go With Courage.
This much-needed family support program is run from the same home office as Go With Courage, without overhead costs. It was created to lift the spirits of those affected by cancer and to ease the burdens of families impacted by all forms of cancer. Among other things, we send support packages to individuals who are in treatment or who have had surgery, meals and gift cards to local restaurants, provide tutoring for students when parents are not available for guidance, arts & crafts, cleaning services, recreation and so much more. If you can imagine the need, this program is aiming to meet it.
Unfortunately, the need for We’ve Got Your Back is growing, as is the urgency with which we are fighting to find a cure for cancer once and for all. If you can help, please do…we cannot continue this work without you.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know our story. I hope to be able to meet you in person one day. Until then…remember to GO WITH COURAGE!
With warmest regards and appreciation,
Robyn Jaslow
